billrunge1 ++ Acid Test by Bill Runge ++

From the creative mind of Juno nominated multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger Bill Runge, Acid Test is a kaleidoscope of hip-hop groove, testosterone fueled funk, 60’s psychedelia and traditional jazz. Featuring Brad Tuner and the Soulstream band the album is a downright in your face tour de force where all the different parts lock together to create a whole groove, a rhythm bubbling along like a big engine when the light turns green – welcome to the West coast’s heaviest groove machine.

Genre: Contemporary Jazz
Sounds Like: Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pat Metheney

Sinuous, lilting saxophone…” - Georgia Straight

Runge is a real comer…- Ottawa Citizen

Sara Lapsley’s Vancouver Nights have garnered themselves international acclaim with the release of their self-titled album on both endearing in North America and Quattro in Japan. Originally known for her time as the lead singer/songwriter in the riot girl band Kreviss, Sara completed two years of classical study at capilano college in Vancouver. The result…complex, mature, joyous compositions delivered with glossy, vintage vocals. On their self-titled debut album, Sara’s melodious piano is backed by Dan Bejar (destroyer, new pornographers), Sean Mrazek, and Steve Ballough.

Genre: Shiny Pop

Sounds Like: The New Pornographers, Stars

Melody, harmony, piano, guitar, sweet vocals (by Lapsley and, on two songs, by guitarist Daniel Bejar) — all are balanced out into the right mixture of giddiness and serious musicality, songs that stick in your brain but don’t seem like bubblegum at all.– Pop Matters

twigs ++ Epicure by The Twigs ++

Twigs are an English/Norwegian band based in Bergen, Norway. Twigs play noisy, trashy pop, with alternately cutting and soothing female vocals backed up by rattling guitars. Epicure, their second full-length and first on endearing moves easily through aggressive indie pop to drone and sparser indie rock.

Genre: Indie Pop, 90′s alt rock

Sounds Like: Sonic Youth, Breeders, Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr

“On Epicure, the Twigs have beautifully crafted and molded these influences, creating an idiosyncratic brand of noisy indie-rock, swerving between the extremes of formless distorted chaos and cheeky, endearing pop. Their originality lies in their strange and wholly individual amalgamation.” – Pop Matters
